Antwerp presents a clear-cut situation: of the 4 verified addresses in our database, all 4 are fully dedicated kitchens, with no wheat flour on the premises, and all in the city centre (postcode 2000). For a celiac passing through, that means four possible meals with no negotiating with the kitchen. Only one caveat appears in our data, and it concerns the beer — we come to that.

The entirely gluten-free tables

El Gato Gordo, 51 Lange Koepoortstraat, is a small Mexican place whose entire menu — tacos, nachos, chili con carne — rests on house-made corn tortillas, naturally gluten-free, with no wheat-based product in the kitchen. Reviews praise the team’s vigilance towards celiac customers. Find Me Gluten Free classifies it as a “Dedicated Gluten-Free Mexican Restaurant”, and Gault&Millau Belgium, HappyCow, Le Fooding and Nonoresto.be confirm a 100% corn kitchen. The point to watch is at the bar, not in the kitchen: the beers on offer contain gluten. Ask for the drinks list before ordering a draught.

Epiphany’s Kitchen, 18 Reyndersstraat, in the historic centre, puts vegetables front and centre with house-made fresh buckwheat and rice pasta, and plant-based bases you top up with fish, meat or cheese. The kitchen systematically avoids refined carbohydrates and lactose. Its entirely gluten-free status is confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free, Tripadvisor, Atly, the company’s Instagram and its official site. This is the city’s refined meal.

Bread, pizza and pastry

Le Delizie Senza Glutine, Nationalestraat 45, is a 100% gluten-free and lactose-free Italian bakery-pizzeria-patisserie, right in the centre, founded by a couple from Puglia. Focaccias, pizzas, breads, croissants and desserts all come out of a gluten-free operation. Find Me Gluten Free, Taste-Italy.be, Wijkkroniek.be, Tripadvisor (5 out of 5) and the official site all agree, and reviews insist as much on the quality as on the owners’ welcome. For a celiac, it is a whole display case with nothing to rule out.

nono bakery, 9 Minderbroedersrui, carries on the legacy of the pioneering “Eugene” bakery and makes 100% gluten-free breads and pastries, also available lactose-free, soya-free or vegan. The status was verified through the official site and Find Me Gluten Free listings. One important practical constraint: orders are currently taken by reservation, with collection on Thursday or Friday. This is not a place you walk into on the off-chance — you have to plan ahead.

Our tips on site

  • Say “Ik heb coeliakie”. Antwerp is in Flanders, so Dutch-speaking. The word “coeliakie” is the one that triggers precautions; “glutenvrij” on its own can pass for a preference. “I have celiac disease” works too.
  • The national association on the Flemish side is the VCV, the Vlaamse Coeliakievereniging; on the French-speaking side, it is the SBC, the Société belge de la cœliaquie.
  • Everything is in the centre. Lange Koepoortstraat, Reyndersstraat, Nationalestraat and Minderbroedersrui share postcode 2000: all four addresses are within walking distance of one another.
  • Travelling on elsewhere in Belgium? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Belgium takes it from there.
