Kelowna is a city of storefronts rather than tables: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens, and three of them are bakeries. The fourth is a 100% gluten-free brewery, which is rare enough to be worth flagging. None carries a certification: the status rests on cross-checked sources, Find Me Gluten Free foremost among them. For a proper sit-down dinner, though, our database has nothing to offer here yet.
The city in numbers
The three dedicated bakeries
Here you can take anything from the display case without reading a label.
Big Fat Lion Bakeshop, 815 Vaughan Avenue, goes beyond gluten: cupcakes, cookies and bars are prepared free of the ten major allergens, with no artificial colors or preservatives. The whole shop is built for people with celiac disease and allergies. Find Me Gluten Free classifies it as dedicated, and the official site, Yelp, Instagram and HappyCow confirm it.
Crumbs and Roses Bakery, 443 Banks Rd, is a 100% gluten-free bakery run by an owner who is herself celiac, and who rewrites classic recipes to make them safe: breads, cinnamon rolls, celebration cakes, pancakes, waffles. A practical constraint worth knowing, and the most useful piece of information here: you generally have to order ahead, this isn’t a shop you drop into on a whim. Find Me Gluten Free, Atly, the Facebook page, Google reviews and the official site agree.
Jaide & Joel’s Baking Co., 555 Montgomery Road, is a fully vegan and gluten-free bakery-café: no non-vegan or gluten-containing product is allowed on the premises. Donuts, cookies, scones, bagels, plus hot meals at lunch and dinner and a freezer section — breads, pies. It’s the most complete address in the city if you want something beyond sweets. Confirmed by Find Me Gluten Free, HappyCow, the official site and many consistent TripAdvisor reviews.
The gluten-free brewery
Grey Fox Brewing, 310 Hiram Walker Court, is a 100% gluten-free brewery founded by a celiac brewer, presented as the only dedicated gluten-free brewery west of Ontario. The technical point matters: the beers are brewed from gluten-free malted grains, rather than made from barley and then processed to remove gluten — the latter method remains debated for strict celiacs. They have won awards at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Verified via Find Me Gluten Free, the official site, Celiac.com and the BC Craft Brewers Guild.
Our on-site tips
- Say “I have celiac disease,” rather than “gluten-free.” In Canada, naming the disease triggers precautions that a simple “gluten-free” request doesn’t get.
- Plan ahead at Crumbs and Roses. Most products there are made to order; dropping in unannounced risks finding the display case empty.
- Celiac Canada is the country’s national reference association for people with celiac disease.
- Continuing on through Canada? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Canada covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen vs. gluten-free menu, the difference explains exactly what “dedicated” means.
