Belo Horizonte is a comfortable city for someone with celiac disease: 4 verified addresses, 4 of them fully dedicated kitchens. Not one mixed table, not one “adapted” menu. A self-service buffet of Brazilian cooking, two bakery-patisseries and the city’s first 100% gluten-free pastelaria — and all of them also work dairy-free or flag lactose clearly.
The city in numbers
The proper meal: Alvarenga Comidaria
Alvarenga Comidaria, rua Alvarenga Peixoto in Santo Agostinho, is an entirely gluten-free self-service. An open buffet in a country where the buffet is the standard lunch, but without the usual trap: here, no serving tongs have touched wheat bread. The range of Brazilian dishes is wide on weekdays, dishes containing lactose are flagged, and frozen items can be taken away. Find Me Gluten Free classifies it as a “Dedicated Gluten-Free Restaurant”, Restaurant Guru rates it 4.6/5 from 233 reviews, and the company’s official site confirms it.
Pastéis de angu, made with corn flour
Pastel do Moinho, avenida Olegário Maciel, in the Mercado Novo, is Belo Horizonte’s first 100% gluten-free pastelaria. Its pastéis are pastéis de angu, made with corn flour — naturally wheat-free, but worthless to a celiac if they come out of a shared fryer. That is precisely the point of the address: the kitchen is entirely dedicated, with no cross-contamination. Nine flavours, from beef with jiló to bacon, with vegan and lactose-free options. Verified by the local press, Atly, Find Me Gluten Free and the official Instagram.
The two dedicated bakeries
Padaria SELEVE, avenida Álvares Cabral in the Lourdes neighbourhood, has been an institution since 2014: a 100% gluten-free and dairy-free bakery founded by two sisters, one a nutritionist, the other a pharmacist. French breads, cakes, salgados and desserts, all safe. Find Me Gluten Free classifies it as a “Dedicated Gluten-Free Bakery”, and both the press and customer reviews describe a safe place for celiacs.
ConfeitaFit, rua São Paulo, also in Lourdes, is a gluten-free and lactose-free patisserie with two ranges, functional and low-carb, both entirely gluten-free. The place, decorated like a doll’s house, is praised for its welcome. Verified through Find Me Gluten Free, the company’s site and customer reviews.
Our tips on site
- Say “Sou celíaco” or “Sou celíaca”, rather than “sem glúten”. In Brazil, that is the word that triggers real precautions.
- FENACELBRA, the Federação Nacional das Associações de Celíacos do Brasil, is the country’s reference national association for people with celiac disease.
- Three addresses out of four are close together. Padaria SELEVE and ConfeitaFit are both in Lourdes, and Alvarenga Comidaria is in neighbouring Santo Agostinho. Pastel do Moinho is in the Mercado Novo, a separate trip.
- Travelling elsewhere in Brazil? Our guide to gluten-free travel in Brazil covers the rest of the country, and dedicated kitchen or gluten-free options, the difference explains why these four addresses are not comparable to a simply “adapted” menu.
