Salt Lake City is one of those cities where the question doesn’t come up: of the 4 verified addresses, 4 are fully dedicated kitchens, with no wheat flour on the premises. Two vegan restaurants, a bakery and a café set up in a former church. Not a single mixed table, not a single “adapted” menu. It’s a short list, but each address covers a different moment of the day.

The two restaurants

Zest Kitchen & Bar, 275 South 200 West, in the heart of the city, is a vegan, entirely gluten-free restaurant serving organic, internationally inspired cuisine. Pizzas, pasta, breads and desserts are served there with no cross-contamination risk, since there’s no wheat in the building. Three sources agree on the dedicated status: Find Me Gluten Free, the National Celiac Association and celiacrestaurantguide.com, which describes it as a “Totally Gluten Free Restaurant.” It’s the address to remember for a real sit-down meal.

Rawtopia Living Cuisine and Beyond, 3961 Wasatch Boulevard, east of the city, has served 100% raw, vegan, gluten-free cuisine since 2005, in a colorful, artistic setting. It’s best known for its raw desserts, cheesecakes and fresh smoothies. The official site, Find Me Gluten Free (“Dedicated Gluten-Free Restaurant”) and Yelp confirm.

The bakery and the café

Good Food Gluten Free Bakery, 423 West 800 South, is a 100% gluten-free bakery: pastries, scones, cookies and cakes, without a crumb of gluten, with a solid reputation among the local celiac community. The dedicated status is confirmed by SLUG Magazine, by Find Me Gluten Free, by Yelp and Google, and the address is cited by Dr. Amy Burkhart on theceliacmd.com. Worth noting: the listing has no original website or phone number — the address and number were found separately, so check hours before heading over.

Hallowed Grounds Cafe & Gifts, 370 South 300 East, occupies a hundred-and-thirty-year-old former church and runs a 100% gluten-free menu, with a reputation for safety among celiacs. Coffee or brunch, you can order there with no second thoughts. Find Me Gluten Free, Atly (“100% Dedicated Gluten-Free”) and the official Facebook page all agree, backed by numerous accounts from celiac customers.

Our tips on site

  • Say “I have celiac disease,” not “I’m gluten free.” Even in a fully dedicated city, the phrase remains useful for questions about other allergens.
  • The reference associations are the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and Beyond Celiac. GIG runs the most widespread gluten-free certification in the United States; it’s the logo to look for in a window.
  • Three of four addresses are downtown — Zest on 200 West, Good Food on 800 South, Hallowed Grounds on 300 East. Only Rawtopia, on Wasatch Boulevard, requires a real trip east.
